Old Hat Makes You All That
Tuning Your Horn To Sound Good

Before moving on with my unorthodox technique, your Horn needs to be tuned properly for being played in such fashion.

1) Tune the Bb Side.
Tune a Concert F (Low C) on the Bb side of the Horn by adjusting only the main slide.

2) Tune the F Side.
Tune a Concert F (Low C) on the F side of the Horn by adjusting the independent F tuning slide.

3) Tune the Bb Side first valve.
Adjust the Bb side 1st valve slide so that you can play a middle G with equal intonation on 0 and T1.

4) Tune the F Side first valve.
Adjust the F side 1st valve slide so that you can play a Concert Bb (Middle F) with equal intonation on 1 and T0.

5) Tune the Bb Side third valve.
Adjust the Bb side 3rd valve slide so that you can play a Concert F (Low C) with equal intonation on 0 and T13.

6) Tune the F Side third valve.
Adjust the F side 3rd valve slide so that you can play a middle G with equal intonation on 0 and 13. Then test D below first line on 1 and 13.

Your Horn should never need adjusted besides the main tuning slide, so you only have to do this once. French Horn is, mercifully, reluctant to play out of tune when the slides are tuned properly and the player hits the right notes.
